Wyandotte Softball Drops Wild Game to Trenton

Wyandotte Roosevelt takes 3-1 lead into bottom of seventh, only to see wild pitches cost the Bears.

softball team squandered a late lead in a Downriver League showdown against on Monday.

After letting up an early run, Wyandotte rallied to score three runs, only to see Trenton post a rally of its own, scoring three runs on wild pitches in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Bears, 4-3.

“Today, we did alright until the end,” Wyandotte coach Jackie Jagiello said. “We played real well, and the girls hit well.”

The Bears were successful in the fifth inning. Wyandotte loaded the bases and converted by putting three runs on the scoreboard to take a 3-1 lead with two and a half innings left.

Trenton spent the bottom half of the fifth inning trying to rally with Caitlin Mercure and Julia Suyak getting hits. Nevertheless, Wyandotte was able to weather the storm and finish the inning without letting in a run.

For the next inning and a half, both teams put runners on the base paths, but no one could push the runners across the plate.

Roosevelt senior Madison Brewer made arguably the play of the game, robbing Trenton of a hit by catching a line drive. Brewer then had enough sense to throw out the runner at first, completing a double play to preserve the Bears' lead.

The Bears entered the final inning knowing that if they were able to keep their two-run lead, they would hold at least a share of the league lead with the Allen Park Jaguars.

But Trenton led off the seventh inning with a double and Mercure followed with a single.

Two pitches later, the Trojan runners were moving to second and third on a wild pitch by Brewer.

Another wild pitch scored a run and Wyandotte opted to walk Trenton’s Suyak to load the bases.

Trenton’s Brittany Webb stepped up to the plate and another wild pitch tied the game at 3-3.

One final wild pitch later, another run had scored and the Trojans had completed the comeback, scoring all three runs unearned to take the victory.

Trenton assistant head coach Alec Lesko felt that his team played great, but the win was ugly.

“Tonight was an ugly win, we gave up the win in an ugly way early, and found a way to win the game in an ugly fashion,” Lesko said. “I’m real happy with the players right now and how they have each other’s backs.”

Trenton head coach John Biedenbach agreed with his assistant coach.

“Sometimes after a win like this you come out smelling like roses," Biedenbach said. "In the past, we’ve had opponents get the ugly win against us, and today was our time to do that.”

Wyandotte plays at home against Melvindale in a doubleheader on May 18 before a makeup doubleheader against Woodhaven on the road.

Trenton will play doubleheaders against Woodhaven and Belleville on May 18 and May 20, respectively.
