Wyandotte's Loselle Advances to State Tennis Finals

No.1 singles player Joey Loselle won the regional title Thursday and now will play in the state finals.

Junior tennis player will represent at the state finals in Kalamazoo on Oct. 14.

Loselle qualified by winning the No. 1 singles title in the regional tournament Thursday at Allen Park. Loselle is the only Wyandotte player to make the trip to Kalamazoo as Roosevelt did not qualify as a team for the state finals.

En route to his regional championship Thursday, Loselle beat Edsel Ford 6-1, 6-1, Taylor Kennedy 6-1, 6-0 and Allen Park 6-3, 6-1.

Thursday’s performance gives Loselle an overall record of 23-1 for 2011. His only defeat came against a 2010 state champion opponent from Grosse Ile.

Wyandotte’s Devon Jones, a senior, also won the regional on Thursday in No. 2 singles play beating Gabriel Richard, Edsel Ford and Taylor Truman. His season is over, however, because the No. 2 singles champion does not qualify for the state finals.

Jones, who also is a standout pitcher on Roosevelt’s baseball team, finished the tennis season with a record of 21-3.

The Wyandotte tennis team finished third overall in Thursday’s regional tournament and finished the season in third place in the Downriver League.
