Wyandotte's Schmittou to Play Football at Bluffton University
Three-sport Roosevelt athlete Chase Schmittou will suit up on the college gridiron this fall.
senior and standout athlete Chase Schmittou has verbally committed to play football at Ohio’s Bluffton University this fall.
On the gridiron, Schmittou helped lead the Bears last year to an undefeated regular season and a Downriver League title. During the year, he played wide receiver, quarterback, tight end, defensive end and linebacker.
Schmittou said he chose Bluffton due to the quality of the team’s coaching staff and their dedication to recruiting him.

“The Bluffton coaches really wanted me to come,” Schmittou said. “They seem pretty committed. When I (visited) there, they seemed on the rise.”
Bluffton is about 110 miles south of Wyandotte and the football team plays in Division III.

In addition to football, Schmittou, who has a 3.1 grade point average, also excelled at hockey and baseball.
As starting goaltender and co-captain, he guided this season’s hockey team to the . In the against Brother Rice, he made 47 saves.
On the baseball diamond this year, Schmittou has played stellar defense at shortstop and driven in several runs with his bat. On the mound, he has logged several innings in impressive long-relief pitching appearances.
Before deciding on Bluffton, Schmittou said he strongly considered playing college baseball at Sienna Heights University, a school that also recruited him.
As graduation approaches next month, Schmittou said his four years at Wyandotte have been a great experience.
Along the way, Roosevelt football coach and teacher George Filipiak has been a strong positive influence, he said.
“He brings me up on bad days,” Schmittou said. “He’s there for me if I ever need him.”
