More than 10 years have passed since Richard Erickson hit rock bottom. In a deep depression, his personal life in a shambles, Erickson had lost his will to live. Today, the resident of Eagan, Minn., is living a balanced, faith-driven life committed to helping others who find themselves in situations similar to those he lived through. Erickson will share his personal story Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m., at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, Minn., in a talk titled “From Depression to Recovery.”
The presentation is part of the educational speaker series sponsored by the Depression Support Coalition, whose mission is to inform, educate, support and cultivate a community of spiritual hope for those affected by depression – as well as their families.
“I was in so much pain at that time that I no longer wanted to live. I just didn't care anymore. I had lost all hope,” he said. “Late one night, when I was ready to take my last breath, I cried out to God. I told Him that if I was going to take another breath it was going to be for Him and His ways for the rest of my life.”

Erickson has dedicated his life to helping others who are dealing with mental health issues including depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. He is an active volunteer, serving as a prayer minister and facilitator of weekly support groups offered by the Coalition in Burnsville and Eagan. “Recovery is hard work,” Erickson said, “but with good medical care and therapy and the support of caring people, those with mental health conditions can live productive, fulfilling lives. The good news is there is hope.”
