Independent School District 196 Canceled On December 10 For All District 196 Students Due To Bus Driver Shortage And Forecasted Storm

Due to the critical shortage of available bus drivers and high probability for heavy snowfall in Dakota County Friday afternoon, school will be canceled Friday, December 10 for all District 196 students. There will be no regular classes for all students (including 196Online) and the following activities will also be canceled:

• School-Age Care (SAC);
• All daytime and after-school Community Education activities;
• Adult Basic Education (ABE);
• Transition Plus;
• Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) and Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes, and
• All elementary and middle school after-school and evening activities.

A decision about high school evening events and activities will be made Friday afternoon and communicated on district and school websites and on district social media.

The National Weather Service is forecasting light snowfall to start in Dakota County as early as 10 a.m., followed by heavy snowfall of up to 1-inch per hour in the afternoon, causing potential hazardous road conditions. Our area is in the heaviest band of projected snowfall, with a high probability of receiving 8 or more inches total by the time the storm ends Saturday morning.

We first considered an early release day, as other districts are doing, but we are already facing a shortage of more than 30 bus drivers for Friday. Bad weather conditions will lengthen route times and delay students from getting home on time. The driver shortage is causing drivers to take multiple trips to transport students to and from school, a situation that would be exacerbated with accumulating snowfall.

These decisions are always very difficult. We are sharing this decision early to give families additional time to make alternate arrangements.

Beginning this year, the first two inclement weather days are designated traditional no school days. E-Learning Days would be held beginning with the third day of weather-related schedule changes in one year.
