Prevent Water Damage And Adverse Runoff Conditions As The Snow Melts In City Of Apple Valley

As the large amount of snow accumulation piles up and begins to melt simple steps can be taken to prevent water damage and ensure adverse water run-off and ponding does not occur in your neighborhood.

If you have had icicles hanging from your roof this winter it may signal that a significant amount of heat is escaping from your home through your roof. Not only will this raise your heating costs; if left unchecked, it could cause damage to your roof structure and lead to water intrusion down the road. If large amounts of snow are allowed to melt, refreeze and build up on your roof this may create an ice dam. This may not allow for the adequate drainage of water from your roof potentially causing the back up of water into your home and resulting water damage.

By simply raking the snow from your roof you can reduce the potential for an ice dam from occurring. Be sure however, to act safely, staying away from power lines and ensure stable footing. You might also consider adding insulation to your attic space or other areas of the home as needed to prevent heat loss. Consult with a professional for additional assistance, solutions, or advice in identifying and responding to heat loss and water intrusion around your home. Remember, proper home maintenance is not only smart, but a great way to keep your neighborhood vibrant and enjoyable.

Please also remember, as snow melts and drains from roofs and other property areas, that drainage including down spouts and extensions should be directed entirely onto your own property and away from neighboring properties so as to not cause flooding or erosion on neighboring property.
