Eagan has officially joined Nextdoor, the free private social network designed to bring together neighbors and communities.

Eagan has officially joined Nextdoor, the free private social network designed to bring together neighbors and communities, as part of a continued effort to improve citywide and neighborhood communications.

"Nextdoor will provide residents a new way to get informed about the community, and easily engage with city departments and with each other," city administrator Dave Osberg said in a statement.

"Eagan is a forward-thinking city that understands the importance of technology to strengthen community relations,” said Danielle Styskal, a communications manager for Nextdoor.

With Nextdoor, Eagan will have the ability to deliver pertinent, localized information directly to residents, according to a news release.

In the coming year, city staff plan to use the site to share specific messages, such as construction notices, water main breaks, and public safety tips.

Community members can ask questions and provide comments, share ideas, give recommendations, and discuss local events through their neighborhood site.

The platform is already a well-adopted tool in Eagan. A total of 104 neighborhoods, representing 78 percent of the city, have started Nextdoor websites. More than 5,200 residents have joined the network.

The private neighborhood sites are only accessible to verified users. The city will not be able to see residents’ conversations or access contact information.

The city's goal is to use Nextdoor to continue to build a stronger, more connected community.
