Eagan To Show Off Big Trucks And Newest City Buildings

EAGAN, MN — Big truck enthusiasts and those awaiting a peek inside Eagan’s two newest city buildings, the remodeled City Maintenance facility and the new Fire Station No. 1, should mark their calendars for the Big Rig Rally on Thursday, June 8. Both Big Rig Rally locations will be chock-full of city vehicles to climb in like dump trucks, street sweepers, fire trucks and more.

This free event includes tours of two brand new spaces and shows visitors how each has improved and streamlined City operations. You can even help paint a scene on a snow plow blade.

Visit the City’s Central Maintenance Facility expansion from 4 to 7 p.m. June 8, at 3501 Coachman Point (free parking available at Oak Hills Church lot at the corner of Yankee Doodle and Coachman Roads). Check out the Grand Opening celebration for Fire Station No. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. June 8, at 4200 Blackhawk Road (free parking available at Christ Lutheran Church and a shuttle will be available to the station).

Both sites have plenty to see and do in addition to big trucks. Staff and firefighters will be positioned to answer questions and highlight unique features like the clock-tower that brings in lots of natural light, five garage bays for trucks, boats and other rescue equipment at new Fire Station No. 1.

At the Central Maintenance Facility you can check out bigger garage bays, customized storage spaces and even a lawnmower wash station that helps protect our lakes. Fire Station No. 1 has a more visible location where the public has been able to watch construction progress.

“We know the community has been excited for a Grand Opening, and this is it!” Fire Chief Mike Scott said in a statement. “This is not only a new building, but a final phase in the station consolidation process that began nearly 10 years ago. It’s a great location where we hope to continue to train our firefighters and provide top quality emergency services for Eagan for the next 50 years.”

Eagan's Central Maintenance Facility is less visible, and hasn’t offered public tours since its last remodel nearly 30 years ago.

“Our Public Works staff is excited about this new space that, for one thing, has a much taller mechanics’ bay where we can actually work on snowplows and fire trucks,” says Public Works Director Russ Matthys. “We couldn’t put these big rigs on a hoist in the old space to work from below.”

Both Chief Scott and Director Matthys say they can’t wait to invite the public into these top-quality new spaces that will help keep parks looking good, streets well maintained and residents safe. More information, directions, details and videos can be found here.
