Eagan High School National Honor Society students sponsor volunteer fair

Eagan National Honor Society (NHS) students sponsored their first-ever volunteer fair on Feb. 8.

The three-hour event brought 16 nonprofit organizations together with students, parents, and the community-at-large to investigate volunteer opportunities, which ranged from mentoring and tutoring to helping with art and civic events.

The National Honor Society is a service organization open to high school juniors and seniors whose grade point average meets admission criteria. Students meet weekly and commit to spending 12 hours per trimester doing individual volunteer work and the group as a whole also must organize a volunteer event. The volunteer fair is the group event for 2010-2011 school year.

Senior Lars Johnson joined the NHS because he "liked their values," including service, leadership, academics and character. Johnson, an officer of the Eagan High School NHS chapter, says planning for the event began in October.
