Edina High School Thespians Present Winter Plays this week, Thurs-Sat, January 29-31

Edina High School Thespians to perform 2 versions of "The Odd Couple," both the original male version and an updated female version

When THE ODD COUPLE first appeared on Broadway, in March 1965, Neil Simon was already a fairly well-known playwright. With its unforgettable pair of mismatched roommates, THE ODD COUPLE made Simon a cultural phenomenon, and he subsequently became, in his own lifetime, the most commercially successful playwright in the history of American theatre. After its long run on Broadway, THE ODD COUPLE was turned into a successful film in 1968, and became a popular television series on the ABC network running from 1970 to 1975.
Thus, Oscar Madison (Senior Alex Kaufman) and Felix Ungar (Junior Rutger Henriksen), the “odd couple” of the title, remained prominent characters in the the entertainment industry for many years and, as a result, became part of American popular culture. Though some may forget which one was “sloppy” and which one was “neat,” almost everyone understands the phrase “odd couple” as a way of describing a mismatched pair.
In 1985 Simon responded to the continued popularity of his “odd” pair by writing a female version of THE ODD COUPLE for Broadway, in which all the characters’ genders were reversed.
Edina High School is doing both versions of the show, and in the female version, Oscar becomes “Olive” (Junior Ella Williams), and Felix becomes “Florence” (Junior Elizabeth Schuetzle).
