I have known the Hoeft family for many years. I first met their son Michael when he started playing hockey with my older brother. He was a 2007 graduate from Simley High School. He participated in hockey, soccer, and was a kicker for football. Our families have done many things together throughout the years, and Michael was like an older brother to me. Michael's life was tragically taken on January 4th, 2009 in a car accident on Highway 52. Michael was not wearing a seat belt. Two times a year his family organizes a Highway Clean Up at the site of the accident. This year's clean up was held on Saturday, October 26. After the clean up the family provides a lunch for everyone . My service project was to organize the dessert table for the luncheon. I enlisted the help of my family and friends to make a variety of desserts for this event. It was a big success to say the least! I also helped with setting up and cleaning up. As you can see this project is near and dear to my heart. Michael touched the lives of so many people. I am just one of them. Next time you drive south on Highway 52, look for the sign that says "Buckle Up For Kicker Mike." This is something we should all do. I look forward to volunteering at the next clean up which will be held this spring.
