Fall is in the air and that means it is time to enjoy a bowl of hot,
slow-cooked stew (also known as booya)! South St. Paul has deemed
itself the "Booya Capital of the World" and depending on the weather,
around 11,000 people flock to this event each year.
The great booya cook-off is a South St. Paul Jaycees tradition. As
2008 and 2010 champions we are proud to be make our 'time honored'
recipe and represent our chapter in the community. Booya sales at On
the Road Again is our top chapter fundraiser. Last year we made about
$1,700 and we hope to exceed that this year!!!
But... making this 40+ gallons of stew is not an easy feat! We need
help with chopping, mixing, monitoring and serving this delicious stew.
Please consider coming to one or all of the following, and hey, bring
a friend along too!
Thursday: The Cutting party will be held Thursday, October 3rd at 6pm.
Bring your best knife, peeler and cutting board and meet us at the SSP
VFW. We'll be using their downstairs kitchen to prepare the fresh
veggies. This means cleaning, peeling and chopping pounds of carrots,
onions, and more! Kids old enough to help are welcome! Pizza will be
provided!
Friday: Set up and cooking, 2pm-12am. We'll be starting the set up
Friday at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Southview in the NW
parking lot. This includes unloading the pot, setting up the tent,
tables, chairs, and getting our space ready to cook. We start the
cooking around 5pm and will have people there all night. This is a
great social activity as there isn't much work at this point but is
fun to hang out and enjoy an adult beverage if you wish.
Saturday: We start shifts at 5am and work all the way until clean-up
(usually done at 4:30). Serving is between 10 and 3ish and this is
when we need the most help! Plus you get to eat the World
Championship Booya for lunch!
We our volunteers! Thank you and spread the word!
