On Aug. 10 just before 1:30 p.m., Anoka County deputies responded to the report of a residential burglary in Ham Lake.

Video surveillance from the home showed McCoy pried open the front door of the residence and later sped away in a previously stolen black BMW sedan, authorities said.

McCoy stole a Springfield Armory .45 caliber handgun, two loaded ammunition magazines, and $1,500 in cash, according to investigators.

Less than 30 minutes later, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office received reports of shots fired near the intersection of Lexington Avenue NE and 155th Avenue NE in Ham Lake.

A black BMW sedan almost crashed into three people riding motorcycles, authorities said.

Someone in the BMW held a handgun out of the car's sunroof and fired several shots at the three motorcyclists, according to investigators.

Police later located the BMW and tried to pull it over, but it fled and then crashed into an Anoka County patrol vehicle, authorities said. McCoy and a female passenger were taken into custody, according to investigators.

Police searched the BMW and found the stolen Springfield Armory handgun, a Bersa .380 caliber handgun, narcotics, $851 in cash, and a fake identification card, authorities said.

According to investigators, McCoy used the fake card on July 19 at a car dealership in Eden Prairie to arrange a test drive of the black BMW sedan. He never returned the car, authorities said.
