Police Terminate Chase After Learning of Toddlers in Suspect's Vehicle

Dakota County deputies did not pursue a suspected motorist Wednesday in order to keep children in the vehicle safe.

The decision to pursue a vehicle can't be a careless one, the Dakota County Sheriff's Office admits. Police continuously evaluate vehicle pursuits, weighing the risks and benefits.

On Wednesday night, authorities from a different agency terminated a pursuit after learning the driver had a 1 and 2-year-old child in the vehicle. The vehicle then entered Dakota County, continuing at over 100 mph.

Dakota County deputies were aware of the children in the vehicle and did not initiate a pursuit so as not to cause more egregious driving behavior. The driver ultimately slowed down and left the roadway, driving into a field where his vehicle became stuck, according to a news release.

The driver fled in bare feet and was ultimately arrested. The suspect admitted to smoking methamphetamine and had an active Wisconsin Department of Corrections warrant.
