Calling All Trick-Or-Treaters!

On Thursday, Nov. 3, after the kiddies have had a chance to pick out some of their favorite Halloween candy treats, bring them and their remaining candy stash to Boger Dental's Annual Great Candy Trade-In for a treat of another sort.

Besides the fun we have each year seeing the kids come proudly in with their bounty to donate, there are also three great reasons for this event:

  1. Message of Moderation - As is the key to many areas of life, it is wise to enjoy things moderation. This is particularly true with Halloween candy and maintaining good dental care. Plain and simple, sugar causes cavities. We echo the advise given by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and encourage your kids to enjoy their candy treats in moderation. And the more often you eat candy, the more likely it is that you will develop decay. It's a festive time of year; enjoy the fun, but also be mindful of taking care of your teeth, as well.
  2. It's A Treat For The Kids - When your child comes to donate some of their candy, we will make it a fun event and reinforce the notion that it is good to do something nice for someone else! They will weigh the goodies on a scale and they will receive a dollar and a raffle ticket for each pound, as well as a pack of gum. The prizes will include fun items such as movie tickets, Dairy Queen gift certificates, iTunes gift cards, and more!

  3. It's A Treat For Familes At The Ronald McDonald House, Too! - Though we continue to preach the message of oral health and limiting sweets, for some people an occasional piece of packaged candy is an infrequent and much appreciated treat. For example, in years past the candy has gone on mission trips with Kim Valentini and her Smile Network International missionaries. For these children, in the midst of stressful situation a piece of packaged candy is an out-of-the-ordinary treat. It has also been given to a local homeless shelter as a dessert treat after meals. Last year and again this year, the candy will be given to our local Ronald McDonald House. They use the candy for their Penny Campaign and other house programs. A RMHC program that is near and dear to our hearts is the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.

Chewing Gum Is A Dental Care Tool For Fighting Cavities

Why are you giving each child a pack of gum, you ask?

Gum with the ingredient Xyliotol actually helps to inhibit the bacteria that causes decay. In a pinch, the mechanical action of chewing gum helps to remove food particles that are left in or between teeth. Of course we always tell kids that they should ask their parents before chewing the gum. If it is okay with you, it is certainly okay with us!

Happy trick-or-treating and we hope to see you on Thursday!
