Group Meets to Discuss Future of Shakopee Fire Station

About 20 people gathered Feb. 18 to discuss turning the station into an arts and community center.

About 20 people gathered Feb. 18 to discuss turning the downtown fire station into an arts and community center. They took a tour of the station, located at 334 Second Ave. W., and agreed to take on different tasks from financial planning to grant research so they can have a plan to present to the Shakopee City Council in April.

Earlier this month, with support from other local artists, local resident and artist Mike Haeg urged the Shakopee City Council to put off selling the soon-to-be vacated downtown fire station so a proposal to transform it into an art center could be further explored. City officials said they would take proposals from this group, as well as others anytime in the next two months.

Haeg has been circulating a proposal in the past few weeks to reuse the fire station as a community and arts center. Firefighters moved out of the station last week, moving into a new fire station at 1001 Vierling Drive W.
