Sanitary Sewer, Storm Drainage Rates Increase Slightly In Shakopee

Beginning Jan. 1, sanitary sewer and storm water drainage utility rates will see a small increase.

Sanitary sewer fees are increasing to cover the expense of transporting and treating the city’s sanitary sewer discharge.

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services, which treats all city sanitary sewer discharge at its regional facility, is increasing its rate by 10 cents per 1,000 gallons to cover the cost of sewer treatment. The city is also increasing its monthly flat rate billing by 15 cents to fund continued operations and capital expenses related to maintaining the city’s system that transports discharge to the Blue Lake Wastewater Treatment Facility.

For the average home utilizing 6,000 gallons of water per month, the increase will amount to $0.75 per month.

The city’s storm water drainage rate will also increase by 24 cents per residential equivalency factor (REF) acre. Because most residential properties in Shakopee are calculated as 1/3 of an REF acre, the change will result in a $0.08/month increase. The increase is necessary to fund maintenance of the city’s comprehensive storm drainage system.

Both fees will be reflected on your January Shakopee Public Utilities bill.
