Millers Rally For Victory At Blake in Softball

Washburn softballers score three runs in seventh inning to steal 5-3 victory against the Bears.

The Minneapolis Washburn softball team bounced back from its first loss of the season on Monday by rallying to defeat host Blake, 5-3, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon in Hopkins.

After trailing for six innings, the Millers busted out in their final turn at bat in the seventh inning to push across three tallies and take the two-run lead they would not relinquish.

The Bears took a initial 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first, yet despite putting runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings managed to score just twice more in the game.

However, Blake's three runs stood up until the final frame as Washburn could only muster up one run in the both the second and fifth innings;  Alex Brownrigg coming home on a wild pitch in the second, Baylee Meichels scoring on an Izzy Brinker single in the fifth.

It wasn't until their last turn at the plate that the Millers seized control of the game as Sophie Pratt scored to tie the game on a wild pitch before a two-out infield single by Rebekah Polland drove home Brinker with the go-ahead run; Polland then stole her way around the bases to record the contest's final tally.

Pratt, who had managed to pitch Washburn out of trouble for the better part of two hours, then closed out the game by hurling a 1-2-3 seventh to clinch the triumph for the Millers.

Washburn, who had opened the season with a 17-3 defeat of Columbia Heights last Friday before losing 5-3 to South, improved to 2-1 on the season with the win and now prepare to host DeLaSalle at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
