After she was appointed to the Senate by Gov. Mark Dayton, Smith won in a special election in 2018 over her Republican opponent, Karin Housley, who had the backing of President Donald Trump.

That election only allowed Smith to serve for two years, finishing out the remainder of Franken's term.

Smith is expected to win easily Tuesday night and face former Republican Congressman Jason Lewis in the general election. She's already begun to attack his record in the United States House of Representatives, including his vote "against the Farm Bill that provided a crucial lifeline and much-needed stability to Minnesota farmers, and included permanent funding for veteran, minority and beginning farmers."

Smith, a former Planned Parenthood executive, says voters should support her because of her "bipartisan record" and her supporting the economy of rural Minnesota.

Jason Lewis, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, is seeking a political comeback in Minnesota through the United States Senate. In 2018, Lewis lost his seat in the U.S. House after just one term to Angie Craig.

Lewis, a former conservative talk show host, is on a collision course with Sen. Tina Smith in the general election.

Lewis received Trump's endorsement via Twitter Monday, and he is expected to win the Republican nomination.

Lewis has begun attacking Smith, trying to paint her has an extreme liberal and linking her to movements that promoted "lawlessness and destruction" in Minneapolis.

"Instead of standing up for personal liberties and public order, Democrats in power, including Senator Tina Smith, have caved to the woke mob by going along with calls to abolish the police," Lewis said in a recent release.

"With the Democrats getting more radical by the day, Minnesota has turned into a major battleground state. Having only lost by just over one point in 2016, the President has proven a statewide victory for Minnesota Republicans is within our grasp. The latest polling even shows the race between President Trump and Joe Biden is a statistical tie. The Democrats are losing their grip on the state, and Minnesota is going to go red for President Trump and me this November."
