MINNESOTA — U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota is expected to drop out of the Democratic presidential primary race Monday, according to reports. The decision comes after Klobuchar, who has just seven pledged delegates to her name, finished sixth in Saturday's South Carolina primary.

A campaign aide told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Klobuchar will end her presidential campaign Monday and that she will endorse former Vice President Joe Biden at a rally in Dallas Monday night.

The move comes just hours after Klobuchar held a campaign rally in Utah. Emails asking for donations to "Amy for America" were also sent out Monday.

Klobuchar's abrupt move is seen as likely an attempt to consolidate moderate support behind Biden for Super Tuesday, when a total of 1,357 pledged delegates — or 34 percent of all delegates in the 2020 primary season — will be distributed.

Klobuchar's Midwestern rival, Pete Buttigieg, dropped out of the race Sunday.

In addition to Minnesota, voters will cast their ballots Tuesday in Alabama, American Samoa, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

Canceled rally

On Sunday night, Klobuchar attempted to host a rally in her home town of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, but canceled it after protesters swarmed her stage at St. Louis Park High School.

The protesters demanded that a man convicted of murder while Klobuchar was Hennepin County attorney be released from prison. The protesters claimed Myron Burrell, a man sentenced in the 2002 murder of an 11-year-old girl, was wrongfully convicted.

Klobuchar held her final campaign rally Monday morning in Salt Lake City. Before the event, she canceled a radio appearance there, according to Star Tribune reporter Torey Van Oot.
