Minneapolis Southwest and Washburn athletic squads began their 2011 campaigns last week.

A number of teams from Minneapolis Southwest and Washburn high schools began their fall sports season last week, with more set to start this week.
Southwest Girls Tennis
The Southwest girls tennis team got its season off on the right foot last week with back-to-back non-conference victories on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Following a 4-3 win at Richfield Aug. 23, the Lakers topped host St. Louis Park by the same score Aug. 24.
Southwest is slated to play at Robbinsdale Cooper on Tuesday in its only matchup this week.

Southwest Boys Soccer
Aiming for a return to the state tournament, the Southwest boys soccer team began its 2011 campaign in an impressive manner with a 4-0 blanking of visiting Holy Angels on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Luc Mally made five saves for the shutout win. Scoring statistics were not available.
The Lakers are scheduled to play at Bloomington Jefferson on Tuesday and at Patrick Henry on Thursday.
Southwest Girls Soccer
The Southwest girls soccer team began its seaosn with a 3-0 loss at Wayzata on Saturday.
The Lakers remain on the road this week with a non-conference tilt at Park of Cottage Grove on Wednesday.
Washburn Boys Soccer
A pair of goals from Ben Simpson propelled the Washburn boys soccer team to a 2-0 season-opening home victory over Richfield last Thursday evening.
Simpson scored once in each half, the first coming as he capped off an offensive surge spearheaded by Ben Froehlich, the second on a blast off a breakaway to clinch the triumph.
The Millers go on the road for the first time this autumn with a trip to Roseville for another non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in the squad's lone game this week.
Washburn Girls Soccer
The Washburn girls soccer team won its season opener, 3-0, at home agianst St. Paul Como Park last Friday.
Individual statistics from the game were not available. The Millers have three games this week, including home contests against Robbinsdale Cooper 7 p.m. Monday night and Maple Grove 6 p.m. Wednesday night, before a road matchup at Blake 4:30 p.m. Friday.
