Stillwater School District Responds To Political 'Confusion' On Immigrants

"We cannot and will not ask a student's status regarding citizenship, visa or immigration status upon enrollment or any other time."

Following political controversies at the federal level over immigration, Stillwater Area Public Schools has written a letter to community members titled, "A safe and welcoming place for students."

"During this time of political and administrative confusion regarding immigrants, it is important to remember our fundamental focus as public schools," the district said. "By law, we serve all students - regardless of their citizenship, immigration status, ethnicity, nationality or religion."

The district went on it say it "cannot and will not ask a student's status regarding citizenship, visa or immigration status upon enrollment or any other time."

The letter continued:

We welcome and celebrate the uniqueness of every child, and our schools are enriched by the traditions, languages and cultures of all of our families. We are committed to continuing to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment for every student. We will not tolerate bullying behavior or harassing language from students or adults toward any of our students.
Our district will continue to provide resources to staff, students and their families as needed. Our core values and commitment remain - we are dedicated to providing education environments where each student feels safe, welcomed and valued.
