St. Louis Park City Council Reinstates Pledge Of Allegiance
In a unanimous vote, council members decided Monday to reinstate the Pledge before meetings, citing concern for staff and resident safety.
ST. LOUIS PARK, MN — The St. Louis Park City Council Monday voted unanimously to reinstate the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance before council meetings. The Pledge issue was not slated for a vote Monday night, but Council Member Thom Miller made the motion to reinstate due to the high volume of calls and emails the city received — some he said endangered city staff and residents, according to reports.
More than 100 people attended Monday’s meeting to voice protest or support of the council’s June 17 decision to no longer recite the Pledge before council meetings, the Star Tribune reported. A similar crowd attended a meeting last week, many waving American flags as they called on council members to resign.
The decision even gained national attention from President Donald Trump, who tweeted about the decision, vowing to fight with protesters and stating "people are sick and tired of this disloyalty to our wonderful USA."

In June, the council voted 5-0 to drop the recital of the Pledge from meetings, citing a desire to accommodate the city's increasingly diverse population. However, public feedback caused them to revisit the topic. Monday night’s decision to reinstate the Pledge received a unanimous 7-0 vote.
