Michele Bachmann Considers Running For Al Franken's Senate Seat

The former Minnesota congresswoman said there's "a price you pay" for running for office and that "the swamp is so toxic."

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann says she is considering running for Democratic Sen. Al Franken's Senate seat in Minnesota. "I've had people contact me and urge me to run for that Senate seat," Bachmann said on The Jim Bakker Show Dec. 27. "And the only reason I would run is for the ability to take these principles into the United States Senate and be able to advocate for these principles."

Bachmann represented Minnesota's Sixth congressional district from 2007 until 2015, when she resigned.

"Should it be me, should it be now? But there's also a price you pay," she added. "The swamp is so toxic."

"If you're a billionaire you can maybe defend yourself," Bachmann said, adding that she and her husband are not "money people."

"So we're trying to be wise. Should we do this, shouldn't we do this, what?"

Franken announced Dec. 7 that he would resign from the Senate after a slew of sexual misconduct allegations were made against him. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton later announced that he will appoint Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to serve as in Franken's place.

Smith will be appointed to serve a one-year term in the Senate, concluding in January 2019. Minnesotans will choose a U.S. Senator to serve the remainder of the term being vacated by Franken in a special election to be held on Nov. 6, 2018. Smith said she will run for reelection.
