1. Longleaf Trace installs new water fountains with safety measures to avoid vandalism (wdam.com) — If you use the Longleaf Trace in Hattiesburg, you'll now find six new vandal-resistant water bottle filling stations along the 43-mile trail to help you stay safe and hydrated. After public complaints when old fountains were removed, the Trace board installed secure, closeable dispensers and may add more locations over time.
   

2. Two Good Samaritans Tried To Save A Driver In A Dangling Sequoia And Dropped Him Off A Ledge (carscoops.com) — Emergency crews from Hattiesburg police, fire, AAA Ambulance, and USM campus police responded after a Toyota Sequoia slipped off a supermarket parking lot ledge and flipped into a drainage channel. Two bystanders trying to help accidentally tipped the SUV, but the driver escaped with only minor injuries. The incident highlights how risky improvised rescues can be around heavy vehicles.
   

3. The Marshall Project Wins NABJ Salute to Excellence Award (themarshallproject.org) — Hattiesburg readers may recognize the Hattiesburg American's role in an award-winning investigation into homicides in Mississippi prisons that uncovered dozens of unpunished killings. The Marshall Project and partner outlets' reporting spurred a proposed oversight bill and a pledge to reopen nearly 50 homicide and undetermined death cases, drawing national recognition from the National Association of Black Journalists.
   

4. Hattiesburg student participates in summer law camp (hubcityspokes.com) — A Hattiesburg student, Samaria Parker, joined 33 other Mississippi teens and college students for an intensive two-day Future Lawyers camp in Brandon, observing real court proceedings and practicing negotiations and mock trials. Judges, attorneys, and professors shared career advice, scholarship opportunities, and hands-on contract and trial exercises aimed at inspiring more young Mississippians to pursue legal careers.
