1. City of Jackson Municipal Court Updated Public Hours (northsidesun.com subscription) — If you need to handle a ticket or other court business in Jackson, Municipal Court now offers extended hours: weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Leaders say the new schedule is meant to make it easier for residents with work, school, or family obligations to pay citations or visit Court Services and the Traffic Division.
   

2. HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands Arrives in Jackson (wlbt.com) — Jackson will host the HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands on Sunday, September 6, bringing ten top marching bands and more than 50,000 expected visitors. The weekend-long celebration of HBCU culture is projected to generate about $5 million for the city, with early-bird tickets, hotel deals, and vendor spots available online now.
   

3. Jackson budget meeting ends early after council misses quorum (wapt.com) — A Jackson City Council budget meeting ended early after only three members showed up, preventing official action on next year's tax rates. With no quorum, council members instead listened to residents calling for more funding to clean streets and vacant properties, and they plan another special meeting next Thursday to revisit tax decisions for the 2027 budget.
   

4. Former Marshall Elementary becomes South Jackson resource center (wapt.com) — Families in South Jackson now have a new Resilience Hub and Opportunity Center inside the former Marshall Elementary School, offering health care, education, and community support. Run by One Voice with partner groups, the center aims to be a long-term home for programs that help residents improve health, find opportunities, and build local solutions without relying on outside saviors.
   

5. MDOT announces 'The Big Fix,' a multi-year project in the Jackson metro area (sctonline.net) — Drivers in and around Jackson should prepare for a $400 million MDOT project that will close one direction of I-20 for 45 days in summer 2027 and again in 2028. The multi-year "Big Fix" will repair bridges, resurface key stretches of I-20 and I-55, and upgrade entrances into Jackson, with detailed detours and schedules to be shared closer to the closures.
