To more effectively meet the community’s public health needs, the Missoula City-County Health Department is automating many of its COVID-19 response activities. This includes a shift from quarantine orders to recommendations for most close contacts, as this will increase efficiency and allow for information to make its way more quickly to individuals who have been exposed to the virus. By the end of this week, the health department will also text all patients their COVID-19 test results and initiate case investigation and contact tracing by texting patients web forms to fill out. This will significantly speed up case investigation and contract tracing.

Commissioners visit with Shantelle Gaynor, Community Justice Department director, as she shares how her team is the support system for clients navigating the justice system. Much like social workers assisting patients through the medical system, her team helps people often dealing with deep emotional or physical impact find resources and support while seeking personal justice.

Missoula County Employees are working hard for you!

Kelly McGuire, Grants and Contracts Administrator, Community Justice Department

“At the Community Justice Department, we implement programs that move us closer to a fair, just and equitable community for all Missoula County residents. Our staff and partners identify strategies to improve Missoula County’s justice system, and as the grants and contracts administrator for our department, I look for grant opportunities to fund those proposals.

Once we are awarded a grant, I ensure that we comply with federal and county guidelines, manage the budget, monitor grant subrecipients, and write reports for funders. Our department receives an array of grants that fund many different programs and services, including legal advocacy for crime victims, jail diversion services for defendants, vicarious trauma support and education for first responders, facilitation of several coordinated community response teams, and access to training for justice system professionals. We allocate a significant amount of federal and foundation dollars to nonprofit and government partners.

It’s been a busy year for me so far – just in the last four months, we’ve been awarded four grants for a total of nearly $1.5 million in grant funds. I’m working with a nonprofit partner now on a new grant application that we’ll submit in December.

It is so gratifying to be a public servant for Missoula County. Every day I get to work with people who are smart, caring and deeply committed to serving our community, and I feel incredibly lucky to be in this role!”
