📰 News we're reading

1. 'It sustains us': New Missoula mural highlights Salish culture and history (tncontentexchange.com) — A new 800-square-foot mural on the Montana Natural History Center in Missoula brings Salish language, stories, and camas harvesting traditions vividly into public view. Created by Salish artist Aspen Decker and backed by the Missoula Downtown Foundation, the piece aims to deepen understanding of Indigenous history tied to the land locals walk every day.

2. Missoula brewery forced to move due to new Whole Foods development (tncontentexchange.com) — Great Burn Brewing, one of Missoula's early craft breweries, is losing its Brooks Street location to the planned Midtown Market development anchored by a new Whole Foods. The taproom will likely become parking, forcing the brewery and its food truck partners to find a new midtown or southside space. Owners are asking locals for real-estate leads while they work to keep the community hub alive.

3. Students, anglers save fish from death in ditches (missoulacurrent.com) — Dozens of volunteers, including University of Montana students and local anglers, recently waded into the Missoula irrigation ditch near the Van Buren footbridge to rescue stranded fish after the headgate closed. Their work highlights both the vulnerability of fish moving between Rattlesnake Creek and the Clark Fork River and the growing push for costly fish screens on Missoula's aging ditch network.

4. Cheapest gas stations in Missoula (fairfieldsuntimes.com) — If you're filling up in Missoula, here's where you'll currently find the lowest posted gas prices, from Costco on North Reserve to several Exxon and Conoco stations around town. The list, built from GasBuddy data, also includes nearby options in Milltown, Lolo, and Clinton so you can compare prices before your next drive.

5. The VBX Keginar series 'What Comes After the Transformer?' – Every Thursday Starting 10/8 (matr.net) — A new weekly VBX "Keginar" series is bringing University of Montana research and AI discussions directly to downtown Missoula every Thursday evening at the CoBuild Montana Center on West Main. Each session mixes a short, accessible talk—this week on the future of AI models—with a casual beer-friendly setting aimed at tech-minded locals. It's designed as a fun way to connect campus innovation with the broader Missoula community.
