UNLV Unveils New Logo; Gets Mixed Response

It appears the logo - the first refresh in more than a decade - will have to grow on some people

It's possible that at some point someone should have said, if we have to release a graphic that explains our logo maybe we have more work to do. That, though, didn't happen and on Wednesday, UNLV released its first new logo in more than a decade.

And while there are some fans, it's not a stretch to say that it has a way to go before people can call it beloved.

There's even a petition to get the school to change it back. Within 24 hours, there were nearly 3,000 signatures.

The school says that the refresh gives the traditional symbol a more active, progressive treatment through a profile that maintains his most notable features including his mustache, strong chin, and hat. (Subscribe to local news alerts on Patch).

"We have incredible momentum on campus and this strong, modern mark highlights our evolution while also maintaining its tie to our rich tradition in athletics," said UNLV President Len Jessup.

"It also reflects a sense of place, highlighting features of Southern Nevada and capturing the pride we have in our community with a nod to the rebellious spirit of our region and university."

The schools says the new design includes an outline representation of the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, an exchange Hey Reb!'s feather with a star design synonymous with Las Vegas, and stylized mountains to further tie the mark to the Southern Nevada region.

For those having trouble making those elements out, the school released a guide to their logo.

The school says the new logo will be phased in on applications including digital communications, publications, field markings, and later on team uniforms and in athletics facilities.
