By Marcus Hale, a rideshare driver in Las Vegas who worked with Nevada legislators on Assembly Bill 523
I drive for a rideshare company in Nevada. High auto insurance costs hit drivers like me every month. Last year, I worked with Nevada's legislators on Assembly Bill 523. The bill limits vicarious liability for rideshare and delivery companies if they keep $1 million in coverage, while holding them responsible for their own negligence. Drivers remain accountable for their own actions. Legitimate victims keep access to the courts.
That balance matters. A rideshare app being open should not automatically make a company responsible for every accident. At the same time, someone who is genuinely hurt deserves a fair path to compensation.
Nevada’s rule stops at the state line. The same platforms operate everywhere. The bipartisan Fong-Gillen Amendment in the BUILD America 250 Act would set a clearer national standard. It would not create blanket immunity or apply retroactively.
Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto should keep Fong-Gillen in the Senate bill. What worked in Nevada should not stop at the state line.
