October 11th is National Coming Out Day and marks the 33rd anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The day serves as a reminder that one of the most basic tools is the power of coming out.

The City of Reno, Reno City Councilmember Devon Reese, and local LGBTQ+ organizations will commemorate the day with a Proclamation reading and unveiling of new rainbow paths that have been placed across the walkway at Idlewild Park.

“As someone who’s come out to my loved ones and friends, I understand how difficult it can be,” said Reese. “This Coming Out Day, I want to express how proud I am of those who have made the incredibly brave decision to live their truth, and I offer my unwavering love and support to all those struggling to come out. I promise you, it is more than worth it.”

In June of 2021, the City of Reno painted a temporary rainbow crosswalk under the Reno Arch in honor of Pride Month. The new rainbow paths at Idlewild Park will serve as a year-long tribute to Reno’s LGBTQ+ community.
