City of Reno working to provide emergency housing assistance to those impacted by recent wildfires (2news.com) — Reno households affected by the recent Bug, Fred, Stallion, and Hawk wildfires can now apply for up to $1 million in emergency housing assistance through the city's new AB540 Disaster Relief Program. Eligible Reno, Sparks, and unincorporated Washoe County residents can receive hotel stays or rent help, with payments made directly to landlords or hotels while state funding approval is finalized.

High School Giving Circle applications are now open for high school students (kolotv.com) — High school students in Washoe County, including those in Reno, can now apply for a free 10‑week High School Giving Circle program that starts September 17 and runs through early December. Participants will meet weekly in Reno to learn leadership and philanthropy by awarding $10,000 in grants to local nonprofits, with no GPA requirement and open to public, private, and homeschooled students.

3. Nevada lawmakers set to explore adding new guard rails for Flock camera use (mynews4.com) — Reno residents should know that state lawmakers are considering new rules for Flock surveillance cameras, just a year after the Reno City Council approved a three-year, $450,000 deal placing more than 40 cameras, mostly downtown. Proposed legislation for 2027 could require audits, annual reporting, and staff training for all automated license plate readers used by law enforcement and private security statewide.

4. Why are some of Nevada's elk dying each spring? Researchers seek answers (fernleyreporter.com) — Researchers based at the University of Nevada, Reno are investigating why some of Nevada's elk herds are suffering unusually high spring mortality, possibly linked to a copper deficiency. Working with state and federal wildlife agencies, the Reno-led team is analyzing years of data and recent field samples from northeastern Nevada to guide future wildlife management and protect these prized herds.

Democrats claim momentum in Nevada House and attorney general races (rgj.com subscription) — Northern Nevada voters in the district stretching from Reno to Elko are seeing an unusually competitive U.S. House race, with Democrat Teresa Benitez‑Thompson narrowing the gap against Republican David Flippo. Democrats also see improved odds in the attorney general race, though Republicans still hold structural advantages, making these contests important to watch heading into November.
