“This day celebrates and honors Indigenous Peoples, commemorating our history, traditions and culture. As being the first humans/peoples of these lands, we are urging all Americans to rethink our collective history.” RSIC Chairman Arlan D. Melendez stated. “We commend the City of Reno and President Biden for recognizing this effort. We are ecstatic our Indigenous voices are finally being heard.”

“In 2019, the Reno City Council declared the second Monday in October of every year to be Indigenous Peoples Day,” said Reno City Councilmember Oscar Delgado. “Reno and our surrounding regions are built upon the ancestral homelands of Indigenous Nations who lived off and protected these lands for millenia, and Reno is now home to many of their descendants. I am honored to recognize generations of Indigenous peoples’ traditions, histories, and perseverance that contribute to the vibrancy and diversity of our city.”

We invite our media partners to join us at the RSIC Gymnasium on Monday, October 11 at 1 p.m. to participate in a special ceremony, honoring Indigenous peoples' many contributions to our region, both historical and contemporary, in the areas of science, art and culture.

During the event, there will be performances by Eagle Wings and RSIC Pow Wow Club Reno, and City Councilmember Oscar Delgado will read a Proclamation from the City of Reno.

Due to capacity constraints brought on by COVID-19, this event is closed to the general public. Residents are invited to view a livestream of the event via Facebook Live at @RSICTribe or @CityofReno.
