CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire Fish & Game officials as well as others worked as a team to assist an injured Connecticut hiker on Crawford Notch on Wednesday.

Around 11:30 a.m., after hiking to the summit of Mt. Pierce with his wife, Stephen Bullard, 49, of Avon, CT, slipped on a log while descending from the mountain. He sustained a significant leg injury and was unable to put any weight on his leg. Bullard called 911 to seek assistance getting out of the woods.

About 15 minutes later, conservation officers began organizing a rescue call. Bullard, according to a news release, was about 1.7 miles up the trail from the nearest road, along slippery, rocky terrain.

“Knowing that the rescue effort would be labor-intensive, Fish and Game reached out to a number of organizations looking for assistance,” the statement said. “Upon receiving the request for help, personnel from the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), Twin Mountain Fire Department, Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team, Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO) School of Wilderness Medicine, and additional conservation officers responded to the scene.”

About 30 people worked to carry Bullard in a litter safely to a trailhead, arriving at around 5:40 p.m.
