Bedford Woman Organizes Knit-In to Benefit Friend with Breast Cancer
Students and teachers knitting, crocheting and selling hats to help support school counselor Tara Veit, who is battling breast cancer.
Monday's "Knit-In" was a chance for students and teachers to gather together in the cafeteria and socialize over skeins of yarn and Nifty Knitters.
They are all working together for one important cause: , a beloved school counselor who was diagnosed this fall with an aggressive form of breast cancer. When she found out she did not have enough banked sick time to cover the extensive chemotherapy and surgical treatment required for her recovery, science teacher Carrie Beach stepped up and organized a series of events to help raise money to help the Veit family through this difficult time.
Hats being made by the school community are being sold at both Nashua High School student-run stores. They will also be sold via , a downtown ladies clothing store at 178 Main Street.

Beach said other ways the public can help support the school's efforts:
- Purchase a donation card: For a donation of $5 or $10, the group will donate a hat in your name (or to honor a loved one) to the Dana Farber Cancer Center (pdf forms can be printed right from this story site, or request one via beachc@nashua.edu.)
- Attend the Feb. 1 Pre-prom Fashion Show at Nashua High School North, where hats will be available for sale.
- Purchase a hat during the Feb. 8 Nashua HS North open house.
- Attend a spaghetti dinner to benefit Tara Veit at Nashua High School South on Feb. 9, from which proceeds will go toward the Tara Fund.
- Like "Team Tara" or "Hats for Tara" on Facebook and watch for updates, as well as featured hats which will be made available for sale on weekends.
Beach said the group has plenty of yarn to work with. Donations of knitted or crocheted hats are always welcome. Questions? Ideas? Want to get involved, contact Carrie Beach at beachc@nashua.edu.
