Sabers pull away for 48-21 Turkey Day triumph.

AMHERST – In what may have been the final clash in the 15-year Thanksgiving-day football series between and , the Sabers of Amherst avenged last year's 54-15 loss and gobbled up the rival Tomahawks, 48-21.

Though Souhegan basted the competition for an a 19-0 first-quarter lead, Merrimack took advantage of a couple SHS missteps and closed the gap to 19-14. The 'Hawks looked poised to take the lead early in the second quarter, but a red zone turnover quickly transitioned into a momentum-changing Souhegan touchdown.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Merrimack standout Jackson King, who had carved up the Souhegan defense for much of the first two quarters, served up a third helping of paydirt when he stuffed the ball into the end zone from two yards out.

But the third and fourth quarters were gravy for Souhegan, as the hosts pulled away for their tenth victory in the 15-year rivalry to recapture the coveted milk jug.

Prior to the start of the 2011 season, the two schools announced the Turkey Bowl series would end following yesterday's game, but the Nashua Telegraph is now reporting athletics administrators and coaches are discussing the possibility of extending the series, at least for one more year.
