82-Year-Old Hooksett Resident Marty Lennon Re-Discovers Trombone
"Dusting Off an Old Friend" 82-Year-Old Hooksett Resident Marty Lennon Discovers a New Enthusiasm for the Trombone

So many of us can relate to a childhood passion left behind when the responsibilities of adulthood begin to take over our lives. Marty Lennon was no exception.
Ms. Lennon began playing the trombone in the 7th grade and continued to play through her sophomore year in college. Unfortunately, as the demands of life got in the way her poor trombone was relegated to collecting dust. That is until October 2017 when, at 82 years of age, Lennon dusted off her old friend and began taking lessons from Manchester Community Music School faculty member Russ Ryan.
“I needed a new enthusiasm,” stated Lennon. “I’d heard about the Music School through a friend and decided to give it a try. When I signed up, I wasn’t even sure I could still blow. When I took the trial lessons, I was amazed at how much I recalled! I remembered notes and positions. I love my lessons, Russ is my inspiration!”

Lennon also plays in the MCMS Community Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dave Bresnahan. “Dave is my motivator,” continued Marty. “When I first signed up, my goal was to be able to play in the MCMS Summer Band. This past summer, I played in two bands! Playing with young people is totally energizing and rejuvenating. I love making new friends and having something to focus on!”
Lennon’s hard work and enthusiasm have paid off in a big way, as she has been named

Her teacher Russ Ryan had this to say, “Marty has come a long way since she picked up the trombone after 40+ years of not playing. Within a year she has played and performed with three different ensembles! She is a great example that it’s never too late to learn or re-learn an instrument.”
