Area Cyclists Ride for MDA

Riders will arrive in Concord for a BBQ with firefighters on Sunday.

This morning, 75 area bicyclists embarked on a 250-mile bike challenge from Canada to Concord as part of a fundraiser to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The program, called the Trans-New Hampshire Bike Ride, is in its 24th year, according to Kendra Butters, the regional public affairs coordinator for the MDA.

According to Butters, the ride is being dedicated to Spencer Desfosses, 10, of Bow, who has Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy.

The challenge was originally started by nine Salem firefighters and firefighters from around the state will not only be riding but helping out with the effort. Firefighters in Lebanon and Littleton will escort riders through their towns. The Concord Fire Department will host a BBQ for riders, their families, and MDA families, on Sunday.

Last year, 81 riders raised $110,000; this year, the riders hope to raise more than $100,000. According to the MDA, 77 percent of every dollar goes to provide service to residents living with the disease.
