Audubon Hosts Newfound Lake Fundraising Swim for Wildlife

The money will go to support New Hampshire Audubon's mission to protect the state's natural environment for wildlife and people.

The Newfound Audubon Center is hosting a fundraiser, the Newfound Lake Swim for Wildlife, on Aug. 8 in Hebron, according to a press statement.

Participants will swim across the beautiful Sanborn Bay from Paradise Point to Camp Mowgli and back, a total of half a mile, raising money to support New Hampshire Audubon’s mission to protect the state’s natural environment for wildlife and people. The swim will begin at 8:30 a.m.

All swimmers must pre-register and are expected to raise a minimum of $50.

“The Newfound Lake Swim for Wildlife is a wonderful event that gives participants the opportunity to experience first-hand the incredible natural beauty of our state,” said Ruth Smith, community engagement manager for NH Audubon. “I had the privilege of participating in last year’s inaugural swim and we encourage anyone with a passion for swimming, a love for beautiful lakes, or simply an appreciation for nature and wildlife conservation to join us for this year’s fundraiser.”

The 43-acres that make up Paradise Point Wildlife Sanctuary were conserved by Colonel and Mrs. Alcott Elwell and ultimately came to NH Audubon for permanent protection. In 2014, Ruth Smith and Becky Suomola, two long-time New Hampshire Audubon staff members, decided to complete the swim as a way to appreciate the beauty of Newfound Lake and to honor the history of Paradise Point. Bolstered by the cheers of their friends and donors who shared their passion for conservation, the swimmers completed the challenge with a decision to continue the event and to expand it to include other enthusiasts.
