Bow Man Faces Negligent Homicide Charge After Crash

Prosecutors: Alexander Burke was intoxicated on spiced rum before early morning crash in Manchester that took a woman's life.

Alexander Burke, 31, was arraigned in Manchester District Court on negligent homicide and aggravated driving while intoxicated charges for allegedly failing to stop at a red light on Lake Avenue and smashing into another vehicle on Union Street which caused the death of Isabel Pena Batista, a 47-year-old woman and injuries to others, on Nov. 29, 2015.

Burke, who has a 19-page criminal history according to prosecutors, which includes burglary, bail jumping, theft by deception, warrants, and other incidents, was held on cash bail.

According to police, Burke allegedly refused to answer questions about the accident at the scene without a lawyer. He also allegedly stated that he was not driving – a woman was. However, an officer working at a local hospital where Burke had tried to get care for an injury he sustained while doing yard work earlier in the day challenged that assertion, alleging that Burke was driving.
