Capital Commons Garage Closed this Weekend

Repairs being made after lightning knocked out electricity on the Storrs Street facility.

The Capital Commons Parking Garage will be closed from 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, through 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, for repairs necessitated by a lightning strike, which occurred earlier this week, according to a press statement.

The strike caused extensive damage to the facility’s electrical system. The city anticipates the garage will reopen for business on Monday. However, the garage’s elevator may remain out of service until later in the week pending a review by technicians on Monday. The Hills Avenue municipal parking lot will also be closed from 3 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, until early afternoon.

The public will be required to pay for parking once electricity is restored to the pay station kiosks.

While this closure is unfortunate, it will provide the city with a unique opportunity to undertake other much needed maintenance activities within the garage, according to officials. Making the most of this opportunity, the city plans to sweep, repaint parking stalls and pavement markings, as well as undertake other maintenance activities over the weekend, including pressure washing dumpster pads at the Capital Commons Garage located near the Lighting Place and Hermanos Restaurant.

Pressure washing will occur on Sunday. Dumpsters near Hermanos will be temporarily relocated to Hills Avenue (directly across Hills Avenue from Hermanos) for the weekend. Dumpsters in the Lighting Place alley will be relocated to Storrs Street.
