Changes May Come to Beaver Meadow Golf Course

Contract of long-time golf pro who has been running the course may not be renewed.

When the Concord City Council meets in November, it may consider a new plan by the Concord Parks and Recreation Department to takeover operations of the Beaver Meadow Golf Course pro shop.

According to a press release, the plan is "a continuation of the ongoing course improvements and reorganization that transferred management responsibility to” David Gill, the director of the department.

In the last fiscal year, the operations of the golf course was in the red by more than $140,000, and the city had to use general funds to cover the losses. In the last few months, Gill has been working with Ed Deshaies, the current operator of the facility, “to improve the management and operation of the Beaver Meadow.” Deshaies has been operating the pro shop for more than three decades.

“This is in no means a reflection on Ed or his staff, it is a good business decision for the City,” Gill said in the statement.

Under the plan, Gill said, the city will hire three new employees – a PGA professional, an assistant, and a front desk operator to operate the pro shop.

If approved by the council in November, Gill hoped that the changes, along with others made in the last fiscal year, will bring the course to profitability by fiscal year 2014.
