Have you ever heard of the pelvic floor? I’ll give you a hint...it’s not something you walk on! Actually, it’s something you walk with, among other things. Your pelvic floor is a tightly connected series of muscles surrounding your pelvis that aid you in motion, rotation, and pretty much everything else.
The pelvic floor is usually discussed in the context of pre-natal kegel exercises, but everyone has a pelvic floor. Keeping these muscles strong and flexible is not just for women!
At Concord Pilates, we use rotator disks as an effective method to strengthen and stretch the pelvic floor muscles. Rotator disks are round platforms (about the size of a dinner plate) that have the ability to spin. After placing one foot on each disk, you focus on keeping your balance as you rotate your toes inward, then outward.

The pelvic floor plays an important role in balance, as well as other important bodily functions. Weak muscles at the base of the pelvis can, in extreme cases, lead to organ prolapse, a condition in which the organs are unsupported and slip down inside the body over time. A strong pelvic floor also helps with proper bladder control and other important functions.
It’s important to keep your pelvic floor muscles strong through regular exercise, but it’s also possible to overdo it. That’s why we emphasize flexibility through the use of rotating disks and other forms of Pilates. If your pelvic floor muscles are too tight, your movement can be restricted. It’s important to strike a balance between strength and flexibility. Come to Concord Pilates, we’ll help you figure it out!
