Classes Canceled Monday At Concord Middle School Due To Burglary, Vandalism

Ransacked classrooms and a smashed office window at Rundlett lead SAU 8 to first, post a 2-hour delay, and then, cancel school.

CONCORD, NH — Classes were canceled at Rundlett Middle School on Monday after a burglary and vandalism incident at the school.

Around 1:30 a.m., the school was burglarized and several areas vandalized, Kathleen Murphy, the superintendent of schools, said in an email alert to parents.

“There were a number of areas that were vandalized, including the main office and three classrooms,” she said. “We are in the process of taking an inventory. At this point, the police remain on the site investigating and gathering evidence.”

The extent of the damage and vandalism caused at the school was such that Murphy said classes needed to be canceled. No one was officially in the school at the break-in time and no injuries were reported, she added.

A front office window was seen damaged at the entrance of the school on Monday morning. One item that was noticeably missing was a knife in a sheath a school administrator had possession of, according to scanner chatter. One officer said the most damaged rooms were in the 300 wing of the school, telling dispatch at least three rooms on the second floor were “significantly vandalized.”

Around 5:30 a.m., officers were sent to the school, including the evidence technicians, to begin collecting evidence.

Around 7:30 a.m., the school was put on a two-hour delay due to “building issues.”

Officers were seen coming in and out of the school and also searching the school’s grounds.

The cancelation notice was issued just before 9:45 a.m.

Matt Cashman, the director of facilities and planning, was at the school first thing this morning but was unavailable for comment. Murphy did not return an email requesting a comment. A message was also left for Deputy Chief John Thomas of the Concord Police Department about the case.
