Concord, Bow, Goffstown, And Winnisquam Face-Off In Wrestling Rumble

Thursday's pre-season scrimmage competition shows the Crimson Tide will be a force to be reckoned with for the 2024-2025 season.

CONCORD, NH — It was only a scrimmage, but the Concord High School Crimson Tide wrestling team came to play and easily bested three other teams Thursday afternoon.

Concord High scored 208 points in dozens of bouts against Bow (112 points), Goffstown with 54 points, and Winnisquam came in at 46 points.

Before the meet, Concord Coach Ham Munnell said a strong junior class would anchor the team for the 2024-2025 season. Jaxon Carter, Isaiah Puckett, Dominic Schinella, and Madison Beauregard, a returning two-time women’s state champion, “in particular have been aggressive in the off-season, with lifting and getting a lot of matches in.”

Nine varsity starters are returning this season, including Carter and Max Chung, both juniors and all-state wrestlers and Biswas Darji, a sophomore who was also all-state. D1 state placers returning include seniors Cullen Burke, co-captain Anthony Gualtieri, and Carl Sirrianna. Junior Wayne Gutierrez-Sakakeeny and Dom Hubbard, a sophomore, were also state placers.

Senior Sawyer McCready, another co-captain, was a state junior varsity champion last year and wrestled for the varsity team in his freshman and sophomore years. Junior Jacoby Merrill did not wrestle last year due to an injury, but he was JV state champion in his freshman year and is returning. Two other freshmen, Leo Chung, was a middle school state champion last year, and Ramon Reynolds was a middle school runner-up.

Munnell said the team had the most returning all-state wrestlers since the coronavirus season. Many young, talented wrestlers were also looking to crack the varsity lineup.

“We’re hoping that those wrestlers can help to set the tone of what is needed to be successful,” he said. “(The) goal is to be tough and competitive every time we wrestle.”

Bow High School Coach Bill Chavanelle, who formerly coached Rundlett Middle School, is in his fourth year leading the Falcons.

He said it was a good outing by his team with a lot of intensity, even though a large chunk of the team, about two-thirds, were newer wrestlers. Chavanelle has been building the team with some help from an extensive youth Brawlers program that helps younger kids to prepare for the high school team.

“We are in the fruit of our labor here,” he said. “That work in the summertime paid off for those guys who were at the same skill levels. I’m so proud of these boys. I had no idea what to expect today.”

Chavanelle agreed with Munnell’s points about the off-season work. It makes all the difference, he said. The Falcons this year, too, only have two seniors wrestling — meaning that for the next two or three seasons, the team will be solid.

Chavanelle said Concord always “comes ready to go … it’s always a game for us.” He said both Goffstown and Winnisquam were “really well-coached teams” too. He said it was also great to be competing against so many colleagues he admired so much like Munnell and Tom Osmer, the head coach of the Winnisquam Regional High School team, who has “done a really fabulous job with that program.”
