Concord City Council Update: More Incumbents to File

Plus, "Jenny K" expected to jump back into the fray; previous candidate Baer considers another at-large run.

As the second day of candidacy filings begins, Concord voters can expect to see more incumbents running for re-election in November and possibly some challengers, too.

At-Large Concord City Council Stephen Shurtleff has announced that he will be seeking a third, four-year city council term, according to an email. There had been some speculation that he might forgo a re-election run this year as he also attempts to help Democrats win the House of Representatives next year so he can be Speaker of the House.

Another at-large incumbent, Mark Coen, the president of Page Belting, stated that he too would be running for re-election and filing this week.

Jennifer Kretovic, or “Jenny K,” as her campaign supporters called her in previous races, has decided to file to run for Ward 3 again this year. She unsuccessfully sought the seat two years ago running against incumbent Ward 3 City Councilor Jan McClure and Rick Cibotti, who had previously run at-large. The former Ward 2 city councilor said her previous two years on the board were rewarding and she looked forward to re-connecting with her neighbors in West Concord this year.

McClure had not returned an email requesting comment at post time.

Another possible at-large candidate this year is Jim Baer, a local retiree, former restaurant manager, and city budget hawk who often writes colorful and thoughtful commentary and is a frequent face seen at board meetings. He said a number of people have requested that he run again – he just missed winning in 2009 by 111 votes – but he wouldn’t be making a decision until the end of the filing period.
