Concord Cops Injured During Arrest

Police: During admission custody processing, Dwayne Crawford scratched officer, resisted; officer head-butts second officer.

A local man is facing charges in court on Feb. 9, after allegedly assaulting two officers during an arrest last month.

Dwayne Crawford, 35, of Pitman Street in Concord, was arrested at 1 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2014, and charged with two counts of simple assault and resisting arrest or detention.

According to an arrest report, two officers and a sergeant were sent to the Pitman Apartments to serve involuntary admissions paperwork to Crawford.

When they arrived, Crawford reportedly opened the door just enough to “poke his head out” and confirm his identity. When asked to step outside, he allegedly slammed the door on the reporting officer’s face, who then pushed against the door in an attempt to keep it open.

“I told him to open the door and Crawford continued to refuse and push against the door,” the reporting officer alleged.

The officers were able to enter the apartment and when they did, “Crawford squared up on us, raised his fist up, and went to throw a punch at me,” according to the report.

The sergeant and reporting officer attempted to take control of Crawford and he allegedly pulled away and continued to fight. While continuing to allegedly resist, Crawford reportedly scratched the reporting officer in the face causing a bloody cut on his lip. This action caused the reporting officer to head-butt another officer in the nose, causing a bloody nose to that officer.

Crawford allegedly called to another man in the apartment to assist him. Police warned the other man to stay put and he did, according to the report.

The officers eventually brought Crawford down to the floor but he allegedly continued to resist and fight. He was warned that he would be Tased if he didn’t stop and put his hands behind his back and eventually, the officers were able to cuff him and take him into custody.

Crawford allegedly began complaining about the manner in which he was taken into custody and the reporting officer told him that they didn’t use more force than was necessary to arrest him safely.

Crawford is due in court on Feb. 9.
