Search for Two Missing in the Merrimack River Suspended

Marine Patrol will be out again at 8 a.m. on Thursday looking for a child that fell in the river and a father who dove in to save the child.

Concord Fire and Rescue teams were called to the Merrimack River at around 6 p.m. on June 24, 2015, for a report of a child that had fallen into the river and that the father jumping in to try and save the child.

The teams launched boats from both Rivco and Sewalls Falls Recreational area attempting to find the missing people. It is unknown at post time exactly where or how they ended up in the river.

According to scanner chatter, at the time it happened, a child reportedly fell into the water near the Hannah Dustin memorial and that the father jumped in to try and get the child. The child was reportedly floating down the river and not moving. Sometime after, a visual of the man was lost, too, and the search for both individuals began as police arrived.

Available police units at post time were being called to Second Street and possibly other locations along the the river to see if they can assist in the search. As many as six boats were in the river searching for the individuals. Marine Patrol was also called to the scene around 7 p.m. They suspended the search at just before 8:30 p.m.

At the scene, the Merrimack River was clearly flowing briskly after rain showers hit the region yesterday. While fast moving, it isn’t as fast as it has been in previous years when people have drowned while swimming along the river, prompting officials to issue warnings about swimming and boating safety.
