Concord Incinerator Fire Goes To 2 Alarms: Watch

Concord and capital region firefighters extinguish fires on the tipping floor at Wheelabrator on Whitney Road in Penacook Saturday.

CONCORD, NH — Concord and capital region firefighters had a busy morning Saturday putting out fires at the Wheelabrator incinerator on Whitney Road in Penacook.

Around 2 a.m., capital region dispatch began receiving calls about a fire on the tipping floor of the incinerator. Dispatch said the size of the fire was unknown. They also reported that a camera had melted at the scene.

When the Engine 5 commander arrived, they confirmed “a heavy fire showing” and requested a working fire call and second alarm. The second alarm brought firefighters and EMTs from Boscawen, Bow, Chichester, Franklin, Hopkinton, Loudon, and Pembroke to assist at the incinerator and to perform mutual aid.

Firefighters attacked the fire from two sides of the building since there appeared to be two separate fires. The commander told dispatch they were performing two blitz fire attacks, which meant firefighters were blasting as much water in two locations to knock down the fires as quickly as possible.

The fire was completely extinguished in about two and a half hours.
