Cops: Woman Faked ‘Baby Bump’ to Hide Concealed Items

"Odd" behavior at Dick's Sporting Goods in Concord leads to arrest.

A Barnstead woman is scheduled to be arraigned in court today after being arrested last month at a sporting goods store on Loudon Road.

Maggie W. Wolcott, 28, was arrested at 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2013, on a willful concealment charge.

Officers were called to Dick’s Sporting Goods for a report of an intoxicated woman in the store, possibly with “clue ink” on her hands.

The officers arrived at the store to speak to an employee and while doing so, a woman approached them asking if they knew where her keys were. The employee told the officer that this was the woman who was “acting odd.”

The officer alleged that the woman, Wolcott, had “blood shot and glassy” eyes, was unsteady on her feet, and had slow, slurred speech, but didn’t smell like alcohol. The officer also noted that Wolcott’s jacket and pants allegedly “stuck out” as if she was concealing something while giving the impression that she was pregnant.

While the officers spoke to Wolcott, store employees found a number of tags from items left around the store. She also reportedly had blue ink on her hands and pants and when asked about it, allegedly stated that the ink was from her job earlier in the day. She allegedly changed her story later, saying she was playing with her nephew.

During questioning, Wolcott allegedly fidgeted and grabbed her baby bump and when the officer requested, pulled socks, gloves, and other items from her pants. The value of the items was about $98.

Wolcott was arrested and is due in court on Jan. 27.
